The Midi
versions mostly sound as the Piano. They may go at a faster speed than
would be right for a live performance
Overture users: it's best to
follow words and music through the OVE scores, but best to print
from the PDFs.
NOTE!!!! My Overture files will also work in the lower-cost
Scorewriter - see www.geniesoft.com.
Sorry - Overture 4 files don't work in Overture 3.

|
The Knave of Hearts |
SATB with optional
piano accompaniment, 2 minutes. The text is a clever poem
by GB, based
upon the card game of Euchre.
Difficult in places. **** New 8-bar intro added - Feb. 2006 **** "Right Bower", meaning "Knave of Trumps", may be an unfamiliar term. It has been dropped from the latest COD. (Bower = Bauer = Farmer or Peasant = Knave.) |

The Purple Cow Part 1 Midi
OVE (Overture 3) |
SATB div. with optional piano accompaniment. Solos in Part 2: T = Narrator in G, B = Knight in F, A = Maid in Eb. Difficult in places. About 6 minutes. Part 1: Gelett Burgess's famous rhyme "I Never Saw a Purple Cow ..." (written in 1895) Part 2: GB's amusing poem in the style of Chaucer "The Purpil Cowe" Part 3: GB's confession "Ah, yes, I wrote the Purple Cow ..." For more Gelett Burgess, see: "The Purple Cow and Other Stories", Dover Publications - out of print but sometimes available on abebooks. |

Cuttings from a Nonsense Book
Choral score PDF
(371KB, 32 pages) Supplement (part set) PDF |
For Choir (SATB), Speaker, and Wind Quintet. Some solos from within
the choir. A 25 minute selection from the Burgess Nonsense Book, including a version of The Purple Cow. Quite good fun, with "audience appeal". The choral score includes a piano reduction, which could enable a performance with piano rather than wind quintet, given a good musician who could make something of it. The Midi version represents the Speaker (narrator) by drum beats (supplement not included). The "user guide" is designed to be included in a concert program: the pictures that go with each nonsense quattrain are of great value to the audience. The Word document has the better resolution for printing. A supplement is now included in the full and choral scores: "The Museum of Kisses" as an alternative to "The Minutes". |

SATB div.
with S, T & B solos. About 9 minutes. Quite difficult. text: Edward Lear's "The Dong with the Luminous Nose". The Dong is a deeper and darker piece than The Jumblies: a sad tale of loss, despair and madness, appropriately reflected in the music. |

Piano version PDF (189KB) Midi Wind version Libretto - Words |
SATB div. with tenor recitatives and a soprano
solo. Two versions: one with piano accompaniment, the other with wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon). A few difficulties, here and there. About 10-15 minutes.
This
work is based on a true story. The wind quintet version has additional bars and a few other minor changes - summarised here. |

For everything there is a season. A happy 3-minute Beguine suitable for the end of a concert or for saying farewell to a singer, with words inspired by Ecclesiastes 3:1 et seq., but entirely secular. SATB div. with solo (any voice), and wind quintet or quartet; alternatively with piano accompaniment. Performing with piano accompaniment may require some interpretation of the reduction and the included chord symbols. |

Full instrumentation, requiring 9 players: 2 x Bb cornet; flugelhorn; 2 x Bb trombone; bass trombone; timpani (3 drums); percussion (cymbal, snare drum, bass drum); vibraphone; organ; piano. For Choir (SATB
div,), Speaker, and Wind Quintet or Organ. Key: F major. Not difficult. For use as an accompanied Introit and Grace at a service on St Peter’s Day (29th June), or as starting and ending pieces for a concert given on that day, or otherwise in connection with St Peter. Both pieces are in Latin, and include accompanied spoken introductions in English; any other language may be substituted for the introductions, or they may be omitted. The choral score serves choir, speaker and organ, and is suggested that it is apt for choir use even in the case of a performance with wind quintet. The midi versions omit the spoken introductions. |
| In Paradisum PDF (44KB) Midi Words OVE (Overture 4) |
Unaccompanied anthem, SSATBB; about
1.75 minutes. In Latin. 4 pages. Key: Bb major. Not sure about difficulty - needs to be sung in tune, though. Reasonably interesting harmonies, all palatable to the ear. |
| And I Saw a New Heaven PDF (96KB) Midi OVE (4) |
Anthem, SATB with Organ; about 3 minutes. 8 pages. Key: starts in C, ends in Gb (with alternatives - see score). An alternative to Edgar Bainton's setting. Includes short tenor and bass solos. |
| Two
Homer Sonnets Both sonnets, printable PDF (c.160KB) 1. Chapman Midi OVE (Overture 4) 2. To Homer Midi OVE |
Keats's
Homer sonnets set for unaccompanied SATB. They may be sung
separately or as a pair with or without retuning. Quite difficult. 1. On First Looking into Chapman's Homer. In Db major. 2. To Homer. In B major. In no.1 all nouns that start with a letter of the scale (A-H) centre on the corresponding chord. In no. 2 the rule is more relaxed but more pervasive. Keats's confusion between Cortez and Balboa is appropriately represented. |

First
version: Henry VIII's original version, set STB (or ATB). All three verses are given, with the lyrics between the staves where singers like to see them. Second version: The more commonly found "straight" version, probably a revised or corrupted arrangement of the original, possibly favoured because there are fewer consecutive fifths (though a new one has slipped in). STB or ATB. Third version: An arrangement by John Kilpatrick. Verse 1 is Henry VIII's version 1, while verses 2 and 3 are elaborations, SATB and SATBB (or SATTB), but using the original words. |

| Stabat Mater Dolorosa (Palestrina) | Unaccompanied
motet, SATB-SATB. Two versions available, identical except for the barring. Both barring approaches can be found in other editions, and the bar numbers match those of such editions. Neither version has time or expression markings. 1. A mixture of 2/2 and 3/2 time gives a good representation the musical flow. 2. A consistent 2/2 may be found easier to use, though it's not as good in my opinion. The midi versions sound identical but would import with the selected barring. |

Two of Bach's versions versions are
available: the one normally performed and found in most editions,
and the 1725 version (for which the differences are included in the Bärenreiter
edition). German words on the left, English on the right. The translation of the biblical texts is based on that by T A Lacey (1853-1931), with some differences where the aim is to represent the German rather than fit the music. The translations of the non-scriptural choruses and arias are by Barbara Kilpatrick. In each version the text takes 12 pages. The Word documents are in table form, so can be re-paged by the user. |
